NATIONAL PARKS  BRIJUNI-a group of islands and a national park (since 1983) in front of the western coast of Istria; located 6 km from Pula; The coasts of the islands are well indented; the total length of the indented coast is 37.8 km. The surface of the islands is fairly levelled The vegetation of the islands is extremely rich - Mediterranean: Brijuni Islands are of great maritime importance. KORNATI-the largest and densest archipelago in the Adriatic Sea; consists of 147 islands, islets and reefs comprising an area of 69 sq. km. The Kornati area is one of the richest fishing grounds in the Adriatic, especially rich in bents species. However, there is also a modern, well equipped marina Piskera ACI Marina located on the island of the same name. KRKA-a river in Dalmatia; springs out at the western foot of Dinara Mountain and flows into the sea near Sibenik; The National Park may be reached from Skradin, by boat of the National Park, which goes upstream to SkradinskiBuk. PAKLENICA-a national park (since 1949) in the south-eastern part of the Velebit littoral slope, close to Starigrad; area102 sq. km; comprises one of the largest forests of the Mediterranean (1,840 hectares) and two picturesque canyons (with outstanding karst phenomena), Velika Paklenica and Mala Paklenica. However, its magnificent beauty and charm is not enjoyed only by hikers and mountaineers but also by a number of excursionists, nature-lovers, flora and fauna enthusiasts. PLITVICKA JEZERA- 16 interlinked lakes between Mala Kapela Mountain and Pljesevica Mountain in the region of Lika. Due to their natural beauty and significance, the Plitvice Lakes and a large forest complex around it were set aside as a national park in 1949. National Park is divided into a broad and a narrow protection zone, which defines the level of protection. Some traditional occupations, such as grazing on certain pastures and forest management according to stringent regulations are permitted in the broad protection zone. In the narrow protection zone only protective measures are permitted. RISNJAK- a mountain massif and a national park in the western part of Gorski Kotar, 18 km Northeast of Rijeka; The area of Risnjak Mountain plays a significant role in the stationary tourism, and represents an attractive destination for excursions climatic resorts, excellent winter sports grounds, mountain tours, hunting and fishing in the streams and artificial lakes.
