ABOUT ISTRA  The natural features of Istria are numerous, but Ucka Mountain, Brijuni Archipelago, and the Limski Channel stand out. Ucka is a mountain with two faces: the woody one in the east and the karstic one in the west. Its summits at ca. 1400 meters, offer an unforgettable view of the land and the sea both. There is a tunnel through the mountain, with a dramatic canyon valley called Vela draga on its western exit. Located off the coast of Pula, Brijuni Archipelago consists of fourteen islands with the total area of a little more than seven square kilometres. The coastline of these islands is exceptionally indented, and they are covered with evergreen vegetation. The archipelago has been inhabited since Roman and Byzantine times, and there are numerous remains of buildings and decorative mosaics. National Park Brijuni includes the surrounding sea with excellently preserved sea fauna. The Limski Channel is a hydro-morphologic phenomenon, created after the Ice Age. Deciduous trees grow on its southern part, and evergreen trees on its northern part. Since there are many small underwater springs of fresh water in a large part of the channel, the marine life in it teems with different species of fish that spawn there. Shellfish has been farmed here since time immemorial. Other Istrian natural attractions include Raski Bay and Motovun forest in the Mirna river valley. Motovun Forest is one of few coastal lowland habitats of the common oak.
